Music Live Review: Esperanza Spalding at the Crystal Ballroom Updated Jan 10, 2019; Posted Apr 26, 2012 Facebook Share Twitter Share By. Less so if you were wedged into a phone booth at the time, but still, youd be crazy not to recognize the grace and joy with which she was singing the phone book. Way, way, way better an option than the phone book is Spaldings new record, Radio Music Society. Not much better than the phone booth was the Crystal Ballroom, where Spaldings current tour parked Wednesday night as part of the Sould Out Music Festival. Because by the time Spaldings sold-out homecoming ended -- with her band joined by Portland saxophone player Renato Caranto for a joyous take on her City of Roses -- at least half the crowd had given up or given in and gone home. Esperanza Spalding Radio Music Society Zip Full Crystal BallroomA half-full Crystal ballroom is a manageable Crystal Ballroom. The packed-to-the-pizza-stand-in-the-back Crystal that existed when Spalding took the stage at 9 p.m. If you were lucky or determined enough to work into the sweet spot -- roughly the front half of the room -- you probably enjoyed the first half of the show. It was tough to hear, difficult to see and woe the poor child hoping for a bolt of inspiration who was left instead to stare idly at the rivets on the jeans in front of them. Her segues, carefully arranged musical conversations with members of her 11-piece band made to work as dialogue with the audience, were buried by the din. Even after the room began to empty people were left to play the game the Crystal makes you play. I heard one guy excitedly tell a friend hed found a sound pocket near the back wall where he could hear the bass. Kind of a problem the star of the show is the bass player, isnt it Its almost impossible to give Spaldings music the attention it deserves when you have to work so hard to hear it and see her. To be fair, the Crystal is a room that presents sound challenges for everyone, but those challenges have to be exacerbated by a large, nuanced jazz band. The show probably should have been anywhere but where it was. Four or five songs in, by the time I managed to work my way into that sweet spot (and the crowd leaked out), it was clear how good it could be. Spalding gracefully built her set into a talk about feelings, smiles, slavery, lawyers, she said, grinning. Esperanza Spalding Radio Music Society Zip Free The SlavesShe did sing about slavery, as part of a pitch to buy merchandise, part of the proceeds from which go to Free The Slaves, an organization that works to do just that all over the world. She hit on themes of injustice and war, the former leading into Black Gold, an ode to self-empowerment, the latter into Vague Suspicions, which carries in its lyrics a shot at the frivolousness of so much news.
